The bronze statue of the young athlete Apoxyomenos
The Museum of Apoxyomenos in Mali Lošinj, Croatia, is a unique museum dedicated to the only known bronze statue of an athlete cleaning himself with a strigil, a tool used to scrape away oil, sweat, and sand after exercise or competition. The statue was found in 1997 on the seabed near the island of Lošinj, at a depth of 45 meters. It is completely preserved, except for the little finger of the left hand and the eyes.
The Museum of Apoxyomenos is housed in the Kvarner Palace, in the very center of Mali Lošinj. The museum's exhibition is designed to allow visitors to fully appreciate the beauty and perfection of this unique work of art.
The statue of Apoxyomenos is 2.12 meters high and weighs 160 kilograms. It is made of bronze, an alloy of copper and tin with an addition of lead. The statue is dated to the 2nd or 1st century BC.
The Museum of Apoxyomenos has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in Croatia. It is visited by over 100,000 visitors from all over the world each year.
