Veli Losinj - Feral
Beach Feral
From 1 June 1888 to 1 September 1896, a meteorological station operated in Veli Lošinj, to which the Central Meteorological Institute of Vienna send a thermometer and a rain gauge. To be able to inform increasingly numerous visitors to Veli Lošinj about the basic weather values, a meteorological pillar was placed on the promenade on Cape Leva. Today, only its base remains. The measurements of air temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, clouds and wind were performed by Melchiad Budinich (1846-1919), a teacher at the Maritime School who lived in Veli Lošinj. Publication of results in Viennese meteorological almanacs attracted the attention of Austrian physicians, including balneologist and climate-therapist Dr. Conrad Clar and the renowned Viennese throat specialist and pulmonologist Dr. Leopold Schrötter – delighted by the properties of Lošinj climate, they contributed to Veli Lošinj and Mali Lošinj being pronounced climate resorts in 1892 by the Viennese State Commission.
